Reddit login wall: a price tag disguised as a front door
Reddit says Google's AI search has stopped sending it visitors, and it will make most of the site login-only. The wall matters less for readers than for the people buying Reddit's data, since it closes the free route into the archive while Reddit renegotiates its licensing deal with Google.

Key takeaways
- Before judging a traffic loss, check which users actually generate revenue; Reddit says over four fifths of monetization comes from logged-in users.
- Treat open, logged-out access as a free substitute that weakens your price in any data licensing negotiation.
- Expect headline metrics like daily active uniques to fall when you deliberately shrink a low-value audience, and explain that trade to investors in advance.
- Protect the data flywheel: if casual readers never sign up and post, the archive you license goes stale.
- If your SEO plan relies on Reddit threads appearing in AI answers, recognize that visibility now depends on licensing deals you are not part of.
What happened. On Thursday, Reddit's chief executive Steve Huffman outlined a plan to mandate sign-ins for most content to deter data scraping, after he blamed Google's AI search features for a decline in referral traffic (Reuters). His line on the call is the one that spread: "The reality is, the AI mode does not drive traffic, not for us and not to anybody." Search engine referrals to Reddit decreased by more than one million on average each week during October. Shares fell 18% in extended trading, even though the quarter itself beat earnings and revenue estimates; the fourth-quarter sales forecast fell short (CNBC).
The angle. Most coverage reads this as panic. We read it as leverage. Huffman says the vast majority of the scraping and stealing of Reddit happens in our logged-out user base (Investing.com transcript). Meanwhile Reddit's two biggest data-licensing partners are OpenAI and Google, and Huffman said Reddit remains "in negotiations" with Google over its data-licensing agreement (CNBC). Shut the free entrance and the paid one is worth more.
The readers Reddit is walling off were also the cheapest ones. Management said over 80% of monetization sits on logged-in in-app users because they have order of magnitude more engagement. Bloomberg reports that executives are willing to sacrifice some of the platform's reachreachThe number of unique people exposed to your message in a given period. Unlike impressions, reach counts each person once, no matter how often they see it.View full definition → to engage a smaller but more engaged audience.
Why it matters. It costs something, and the founder said so. Huffman told CNBC that "Reddit is the last platform to provide basically unfettered logged-out access, and that's largely because of me, I've been holding that line." The bet is that the drop in audience size is a tradeoff and not a leak. The Next Web notes that logged-out daily users grew 17%, faster than logged-in users at 7%, so Reddit is walling off its fastest-growing segment. One analyst warned Reuters that "requiring users to log in creates another barrier to engagement, particularly for casual users."
What to watch. The rollout itself: Reddit plans to start testing different approaches in markets outside of the US throughout the fourth quarter, and hasn't decided yet which parts of its site will remain available to logged-out visitors (Bloomberg). Then the Google renewal, and whether Reddit ends up with a bigger check or no deal at all.
