# Operating leverage: why asset managers print money on the next dollar
Two firms each add $2 billion in new assets under management (AUM). One is a manufacturer buying a new plant. The other is an equity fund manager. The manufacturer spends heavily to serve the new demand. The asset manager? It barely spends anything extra. Same portfolio managers, same systems, same office. The fee revenue on that $2 billion lands almost entirely in profit.
That gap is called operating leverage, and it explains why the best asset managers post operating margins that would embarrass most industries, and why the same firms can crater in a downturn.
Operating leverage measures how much profit changes when revenue changes. It is driven by the mix of fixed costs (rent, salaries, technology, compliance) versus variable costs (things that scale directly with revenue).
Asset management is dominated by fixed costs. Consider what it takes to run an equity strategy:

This is the core insight. Revenue scales with AUM, but costs largely do not.
Most traditional asset managers charge a management fee: a percentage of AUM, billed regardless of performance. A fund with a 0.50% fee on $10 billion earns $50 million a year.
AUM moves for two reasons:

Scale compounds the effect. A large diversified manager can add AUM to existing strategies with almost no incremental cost. Their systems, research, and compliance functions are already built and paid for. Every additional billion runs through a machine that is already switched on.
That is why the largest global managers routinely report operating margins well above what most sectors ever see. The marginal-dollar economics are extraordinary. Passive giants push this further: an index fund can absorb enormous inflows with barely any added headcount, which is a big reason the industry has consolidated toward scale players. Sophisticated firms actively manage their cost structure to soften the downside without giving up the upside:
