Ferrari sells roughly 14,000 cars a year. Toyota sells over 10 million. Yet on a per-dollar-of-capital basis, Ferrari is one of the most profitable manufacturers on earth, while most volume automakers barely earn back the money they borrow and raise. That gap is captured by one number: return on invested capital (ROIC).

If you learn one ratio for the auto sector, learn this one. It cuts through the noise of revenue growth and unit volumes and answers the question that matters to investors: is this company creating value or destroying it?

What ROIC actually measures

ROIC tells you how much operating profit a company generates for every dollar of capital tied up in the business.

Automakers are capital monsters. Factories, tooling, stamping presses, battery plants, and inventory all soak up cash. A company can grow revenue for years and still destroy value if it needs ever more capital to do so. ROIC exposes that.

The formula:

ROIC = NOPAT / Invested Capital

Two terms to define:

  • NOPAT (Net Operating Profit After Tax): operating profit (also called EBIT, earnings before interest and taxes) minus the taxes you would pay on it. It strips out how the company is financed (debt versus equity) so you see the raw earning power of operations.
  • Invested Capital: the total money put into the business. A common approximation is total debt plus total equity, minus cash and cash equivalents (because idle cash is not "invested" in operations).

The benchmark that decides everything: WACC

ROIC by itself means nothing. You compare it to the weighted average cost of capital (WACC): the blended cost of the company's debt and equity, weighted by how much of each it uses.

The rule:

  • ROIC above WACC = the company creates value.
  • ROIC below WACC = it destroys value, no matter how big it is.

For large industrial and auto firms in 2026, WACC commonly sits in the 7 to 10 percent range (this is an estimate and varies by company, rate environment, and region; higher-risk EV startups run well above this). So an automaker earning a 6 percent ROIC is quietly burning shareholder money even while reporting a "profit."

That is the trap volume OEMs (original equipment manufacturers, meaning the automakers themselves) fall into.

A worked calculation

Let us run a simplified example. Numbers are illustrative, not pulled from any single company's filing.

Imagine a mid-size volume automaker, "GenericMotors":

  • Operating profit (EBIT): $8 billion
  • Tax rate: 25 percent
  • Total debt: $60 billion
  • Total equity: $50 billion
  • Cash: $20 billion

Step 1: NOPAT

NOPAT = EBIT x (1, tax rate)

NOPAT = $8B x (1, 0.25) = $8B x 0.75 = $6 billion

Step 2: Invested Capital

Invested Capital = Debt + Equity, Cash

Invested Capital = $60B + $50B - $20B = $90 billion

Step 3: ROIC

ROIC = $6B / $90B = 6.7 percent

If GenericMotors' WACC is 8 percent, it is destroying value. It earns 6.7 cents on every dollar of capital but must pay 8 cents to finance that dollar. The 1.3 point gap, multiplied across $90 billion, is real value leaking out every year.

This is the structural reality for much of the mass-market industry: massive capital bases, thin margins, and returns that hover around or below their cost of capital.

Why Ferrari clears 30 percent

Now the other end. Ferrari, which reports as a public company (NYSE and Borsa Italiana), has historically posted a very high ROIC, frequently cited above 30 percent in recent years (verify against current filings; it fluctuates).

Two reasons, both financial:

1. Fat margins (the numerator). Ferrari's operating margin runs far above volume peers. It controls supply deliberately, keeps a waiting list, and prices with pricing power that looks more like luxury goods (think Hermes) than automotive. High EBIT means high NOPAT.

2. Light capital base (the denominator). Ferrari builds a tiny number of expensive cars in one location. It does not need the sprawling global factory footprint of a company making millions of vehicles. Less invested capital in the denominator, higher ROIC.

High margin over low capital equals extraordinary returns. That is the whole equation.

Reading ROIC across the sector

  • Luxury / ultra-premium (Ferrari, Porsche): high ROIC, often comfortably above WACC. Pricing power plus disciplined capital.

The EV twist: why ROIC is falling industry-wide

Here is the 2026 pressure point. The shift to electric vehicles is a ROIC destroyer in the short term for one clear reason: it inflates the denominator.

Battery plants (often called gigafactories), new EV platforms, and charging infrastructure require enormous upfront capital. Meanwhile EV margins are thinner than legacy internal-combustion vehicles for most players due to battery costs and price competition. So NOPAT stays flat or shrinks while invested capital balloons.

Result: ROIC compresses across the volume industry during the transition. This is why some automakers have slowed EV spending, formed joint ventures to share plant costs, or licensed technology. Every one of those moves is, in ROIC terms, an attempt to protect the denominator.

Common traps when using ROIC

Trap 1: One year is noise. Auto is a cyclical business. A single strong or weak year distorts ROIC. Look at a 5-year average to see through the cycle.

Trap 2: Captive finance arms. Many automakers run large lending businesses (for example, Ford Credit). These have very different capital dynamics from manufacturing. For a clean read, use the automotive/industrial segment figures the company reports separately, not the consolidated whole.

ROIC is the scoreboard. Revenue tells you size. Margin tells you profitability on sales. ROIC tells you whether the entire capital-hungry machine is worth running.

2. Compare it to a WACC assumption around 7 to 10 percent.

3. Ask: is the gap positive or negative, and is it widening or narrowing over five years?
