Toyota routinely posts operating margins near 10%, while some mass-market rivals fight to stay above 4%. Same industry, same customers, same steel and semiconductors. The gap tells you almost everything about who is winning. This lesson gives you the yardsticks to make that judgment in minutes, using numbers you can find in any annual report.

Why benchmarks beat opinions

Automotive is capital-heavy, cyclical, and thin-margin. A factory costs billions, runs for decades, and only makes money if it runs full. That structure means a handful of ratios reveal health faster than any narrative.

Learn five: OEM operating margin, supplier operating margin, inventory days, capacity utilization, and revenue per vehicle. Master these and you can size up a company before you finish your coffee.

First, the vocabulary.

  • OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer): the carmaker whose badge is on the vehicle. Toyota, Volkswagen, Ford, Stellantis, BMW.
  • Tier 1 supplier: sells directly to OEMs (Bosch, ZF, Continental, Magna, Forvia).
  • Tier 2/3: sell to Tier 1s, further down the chain.
  • Operating margin: operating profit divided by revenue. It strips out financing and tax, so it isolates how well the core car business runs.

The market you are judging (as of 2026)

Rough scale, all figures estimates for orientation:
  • US new light-vehicle sales: around 15 to 16 million units per year. Source data is published by the US Bureau of Economic Analysis and BEA-linked auto stats.
  • Europe (EU new car registrations): around 10 to 11 million cars per year, tracked by ACEA, the European Automobile Manufacturers Association.
  • Both markets are mature and roughly flat in units. Growth now comes from mix (bigger vehicles, EVs, software) rather than volume.

The structural takeaway: nobody is growing by selling more cars in these regions. They grow by earning more per car. That is why margin and revenue-per-vehicle matter more than ever.

Benchmark 1: OEM operating margin (6 to 10%)

Treat this as the master gauge for a carmaker.

  • Below 5%: fragile. One recession or one bad model cycle and profit disappears.
  • 6 to 10%: healthy. This is the mass-market to premium range where most durable players live.
  • Above 10%: strong, usually premium brands (BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche) or a structurally lean operator like Toyota in good years.

Premium players earn more because buyers pay for the badge. Luxury houses have at times posted margins well above the mass-market range. Volume brands operate on much thinner economics because a $30,000 car has little pricing headroom.

Watch the trend, not just the level. A margin sliding from 8% to 4% over two years signals cost or demand trouble even if the number still looks acceptable.

Benchmark 2: Supplier operating margin (5 to 8%)

Suppliers sit downstream and absorb pressure from OEMs, who push for annual price cuts. So their healthy band sits slightly below OEMs.

  • 5 to 8%: normal for a solid Tier 1.
  • Below 4%: warning sign, especially for a firm heavy in combustion-engine parts facing the EV transition.
  • Specialist suppliers with proprietary technology (advanced sensors, power electronics) can exceed the band. Commodity parts makers (stamped metal, basic wiring) live at the bottom.

Ask what a supplier actually sells. A firm making engine components faces shrinking demand as EVs remove the engine. A firm making battery thermal systems faces the opposite.

Benchmark 3: Inventory days

Inventory days measures how long unsold stock sits before it sells. High and rising inventory means production is outrunning demand, which forces discounts and kills margin.

Simple calculation:

Inventory Days = (Inventory / Cost of Goods Sold) x 365

Worked example. Suppose a carmaker reports:

  • Inventory: $18 billion
  • Cost of goods sold (COGS): $220 billion
Inventory Days = (18 / 220) x 365 = 29.9 days

Roughly 30 days of stock. For finished vehicles at the dealer level, US industry commentary often references a healthy zone around 60 days of supply, with much above that signaling gluts and heavy incentives. The exact "good" number varies by segment and source, so compare a company to its own history and to direct rivals rather than to a single magic figure.

The move to watch: inventory days climbing while sales are flat. That combination almost always precedes a wave of price cuts.

Benchmark 4: Capacity utilization

A car plant has fixed costs whether it builds 50 cars or 500. Utilization is the share of that capacity actually used.

  • Around 80% and above: the widely cited healthy threshold. Fixed costs are spread thin, each car is profitable.
  • 70 to 80%: uncomfortable, margins under pressure.
  • Below 70%: often loss-making. The plant burns money it cannot dilute.

This is why plant closures and shift cuts make headlines. When a European OEM announces it is idling a factory, it is usually because regional utilization fell below the profitable line. Underused capacity in Europe has been a persistent structural problem, which is exactly why the 80% threshold is worth memorizing.

Benchmark 5: Revenue per vehicle

Divide automotive revenue by units sold. It captures pricing power and mix in one number.

Revenue per Vehicle = Auto Revenue / Vehicles Sold

Example: $150 billion in auto revenue and 5 million vehicles gives $30,000 per vehicle. A premium brand might show two or three times that. A budget-focused player far less.

Rising revenue per vehicle with stable volume is the healthiest signal in the industry: the company is earning more from the same customers, often through options, software subscriptions, and richer trim levels.

You do not need a model. Run this sequence on any carmaker or supplier.

  • Check the reporting basis. US firms report under US GAAP, most European firms under IFRS. Definitions of operating profit differ, so compare like with like.
  • Read utilization footnotes. "Capacity" can be defined optimistically. Look for actual production versus rated capacity.
  • Adjust for one-offs. Restructuring charges, warranty recalls, and currency swings can move margin by full points in a single quarter.
