Why benchmarks matter more than absolute numbers

A combined ratio of 98% means nothing on its own. Is that good? For a US personal auto insurer in a catastrophe-heavy year, yes. For a European life reinsurer, it's an odd metric to even quote. Now flip one input: incurred losses rise to $430 million after a bad hurricane season.

Combined ratio = (430 + 120) ÷ 500 = 550 ÷ 500 = 110%
