# Same-store sales and comparable growth: the metric that moves stock prices
On October 15, 2024, LVMH reported organic revenue growth of 3% for the first nine months of the year, well below analyst expectations of around 5%. The stock dropped roughly 6% that day, erasing about 11 billion euros in market capitalization within hours. No profit warning. No scandal. Just a growth number that came in soft. That number was, in large part, comparable sales.
If you work anywhere near luxury, you need to understand this metric cold. It is the single figure that analysts, journalists, and investment committees scan first in every earnings release.
Comparable sales (also called "same-store sales," "like-for-like," or "organic growth" depending on the house) strips out three distortions that would otherwise make revenue growth misleading:
Strip all three out and you get a number that answers one question: are people buying more of the same stuff, in the same places, at constant exchange rates? That is organic growth, and it is the closest proxy available for genuine demand.
Here is a simplified version of what a finance team actually does, using illustrative numbers (not real company data):
Step 1: Start with reported revenue growth.
Say a maison reports total revenue of €22 billion this year versus €20 billion last year. That is 10% reported growth.
Step 2: Strip out currency.
If the euro weakened against the dollar and yen during the year, foreign sales translate into more euros just from the exchange rate. Suppose currency added 3 percentage points. Constant-currency growth is now 7%.
Step 3: Strip out new stores and scope changes.
If the group opened net new stores contributing 2 percentage points of growth, and made no acquisitions, organic (comparable) growth is roughly:
10% (reported) − 3% (currency) − 2% (new stores) = 5% organic growth
That 5% is the number that matters to markets. It tells you existing boutiques, in existing markets, at stable exchange rates, sold 5% more than the prior year.
Total revenue can grow while the underlying business is deteriorating, simply through square-footage expansion or a favorable dollar. Comparable growth answers whether the brand's desirability and pricing power are actually intact.

The spread between these three groups, all exposed to the same macro environment, tells you comparable growth is brand-specific, not just cyclical. That is the analytical value: it isolates company execution from currency and expansion noise.
Comparable sales behave differently by region because the drivers differ:
Analysts increasingly ask management teams to break down comparable growth by customer nationality, not just by store location, because a Paris boutique's sales might be driven almost entirely by non-European tourists.
Luxury stocks trade at premium valuations (LVMH and Hermès have historically traded at forward price-to-earnings multiples well above the broader market, often 20x to 30x or higher, an estimate that varies with market conditions). Those multiples are built on an assumption of durable, high-single-digit organic growth.
When comparable growth comes in at 3% instead of an expected 6%, it is not just a one-time miss. It signals to the market that:
1. Future growth assumptions embedded in the valuation may be too high.
2. Pricing power (the ability to raise prices without losing volume) may be weakening.
3. Peer companies reporting later may show the same pattern (a "sector read-through").

When a luxury group reports, run this checklist:
1. Find the organic/comparable growth figure, usually stated separately from "reported growth" in the press release headline.
2. Check the currency and scope adjustments in the footnotes: how many points did currency add or subtract?
3. Compare to consensus estimates: the market reacts to the gap versus expectations, not the absolute number. A 4% print that beats a 2% consensus is a positive surprise; the same 4% missing a 7% consensus is a negative shock.
4. Check regional and brand-level breakdowns: a group-level number can hide one strong brand masking a weak one (Kering's Gucci exposure is the clearest recent example).

Comparable sales are typically classified as a "non-GAAP" or "non-IFRS" measure (adjusted figures that deviate from standard US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles or International Financial Reporting Standards). Companies must reconcile them to reported revenue in financial statement footnotes, a requirement enforced by regulators such as the SEC in the US and equivalent European authorities.
