You run the numbers yourself, fast, on the back of an envelope. This lesson walks through a sample product P&L (profit and loss statement) and teaches you the five calculations that let you sanity-check almost any pharma claim in under two minutes.

Calculation 1: Gross-to-net (the hidden discount)

Gross-to-net (GTN) is the gap between a drug's list price (what's published) and its net price (what the manufacturer actually collects after rebates, discounts, and fees).

In the US, this gap is large because of rebates paid to PBMs (pharmacy benefit managers, the middlemen who negotiate formulary placement for insurers) and discounts required under
