In finance, the MBA is first a way in: investment banks, funds and asset managers hire associates from the leading programs every year, largely through the summer internship of two-year US MBAs. It also builds the base expected of a future CFO: corporate finance, valuation, M&A, financial control and markets. School rank weighs more here than in other careers, because it opens or closes access to investment banking and private equity recruiters.
The ranking below compares MBAs, Executive MBAs and Online MBAs across Europe and the United States, anchored on the FT, QS, Economist and Bloomberg rankings, then weighted for this career. For each program: how it is attended (full-time or while working), its length in months, cost and post-MBA salary, all sourced.

Choosing an MBA for finance: FAQ
▶Do you need an MBA to work in investment banking or private equity?
To move into investment banking after a few years in another field, the MBA is the classic route: banks hire summer associates from the leading programs, then make them offers. In private equity, it mostly helps candidates who already have banking or consulting experience; on its own, it rarely opens the door.
▶Can you take a finance MBA without leaving your job?
Yes. Of the 70 programs in this ranking with a documented rhythm, 4 can be taken alongside a job: 2 modular and 2 blended. The best placed for this career are Trium: HEC Paris / LSE / NYU Stern (Trium Global Executive MBA), INSEAD (Global Executive MBA) and Warwick Business School (Global Online MBA). The others are full-time and require a career break, in exchange for full access to on-campus recruiting.
▶How long does a finance MBA take?
In this ranking, published length runs from 10 to 24 months, with a median of 21 months (70 programs documented). Full-time, the median is 12 months in Europe against 23 months in the United States, where the program usually spans two academic years with a summer internship in between. Each entry in the ranking gives the program's exact rhythm and the official page that describes it.
▶MBA, master's in finance or CFA?
A master's in finance trains junior profiles for technical roles in markets and asset management. The CFA certifies expertise in financial analysis and asset management, and is prepared while working. The MBA prepares for management and the CFO path, and remains the recruiting channel for investment banking associates. They often complement each other rather than compete.
▶Why does school rank matter so much in finance?
Banks and funds concentrate their recruiting on a limited number of campuses. Outside those schools you can still get in, but through networking and with far more difficulty. That is why reputation weighs 45% of the finance fit score, against 35 to 40% in the guide's other rankings.
▶Full-time or Executive MBA to become a CFO?
An Executive MBA taken while working suits a financial controller or finance director who wants to rise within their company, where a path already exists. Full-time makes more sense to change industry or move into investment banking, because it gives access to the summer internship and on-campus recruiting.
▶What should you look at in a finance-focused MBA?
The depth of electives in corporate finance, valuation and markets, student-run investment funds and active finance clubs, proximity to a financial center and, above all, the share of graduates placed in finance in the school's employment report.
▶What does an MBA cost and how do you judge the return?
The real cost adds tuition and, for a full-time program, the salary you give up while studying. For each school, this ranking shows the published total cost, the weighted salary three years after graduation according to the Financial Times, and a payback period computed from those figures when they are available.
▶Is the GMAT required?
Not always. Many schools accept the GRE or the Executive Assessment, and some waive the test for experienced candidates. The ranking's GMAT optional filter shows them, but check the requirements on the program page, as they change from year to year.
