# Environmental law: EPA rules that decide what you can dump, burn, or emit

Chemical coating processes release volatile organic compounds (VOCs), carbon-based chemicals that evaporate easily and react in sunlight to form ground-level ozone (smog). 1. Permitting tier depends on volume. Coating plants rinse equipment, treat surfaces, and sometimes wash down floors. That wastewater carries metals, solvents, and suspended solids. Two CWA mechanisms control this:
1. NPDES permits for direct discharge.
