# The numbers that size the market: US and Europe banking at a glance
A managing director walks into a pitch and, without notes, states that the US banking system holds roughly $24 trillion in assets across about 4,500 insured banks, while the euro area concentrates a comparable pile in a fraction of the number of players. Those two facts do more work than any slide. They tell you instantly that the US is fragmented and Europe is concentrated, and that shapes everything from pricing power to regulation.

The US has thousands of small community banks (locally focused banks, often under $10bn in assets) alongside a few giants. Europe has fewer, larger national champions.

But averages lie here. The top 4 US banks alone hold well over $10 trillion combined, so the median community bank is far smaller than $5.3bn. The takeaway: US assets are heavily skewed to a few giants sitting atop a very long tail.
The CR5 is the share of total assets held by the five largest banks. It is the single fastest read on market structure.
Worked example. Suppose in a given European country total bank assets are €2,000bn and the top five banks hold €1,300bn:
CR5 = 1,300 / 2,000 = 65%
A CR5 of 65% signals a concentrated market with strong incumbent pricing power. A CR5 near 35% (closer to the US nationally) signals fragmentation and more competition. Countries like the Netherlands and Sweden run very high CR5s; Germany, with its many regional and cooperative banks, runs notably lower.
Divide bank assets by population.
Euro area: roughly €32 trillion / about 350 million people = around €90,000 per person.
US: $24 trillion / about 335 million = around $72,000 per person.
Higher assets per capita often reflect a bank-based economy (households and firms rely on bank loans), while the US is more market-based (firms borrow via bond and equity markets). This is why European banks hold proportionally more of the economy on their balance sheets.
Three trends define the current picture (directional, based on published regulator and industry data):
Deposits as a share of bank funding. Deposits are the cheap, sticky funding base. When deposit growth slows or shifts to higher-cost accounts, funding pressure follows. After the 2023 US regional bank stress (Silicon Valley Bank), deposit stability became a headline metric professionals check every quarter.

Before you rely on any banking figure, run these:
1. Check the as-of date. Bank assets move quarterly. A $24trn US figure from Q1 is stale by Q4. Always cite the reporting period.
2. Confirm the perimeter. "Europe" can mean the euro area, the EU 27, or Europe including the UK and Switzerland. UK banking (HSBC, Barclays, Lloyds, NatWest) is large and post-Brexit sits outside EU data. Mixing perimeters is the most common error in banking decks.
3. Separate assets from AUM from deposits. A wealth manager quoting "$3 trillion" almost certainly means AUM, not balance-sheet assets. Do not compare it to a bank's asset base.
4. Identify the regulator. For a US bank, is it FDIC-insured and supervised by the OCC (Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, which charters national banks) or the Federal Reserve? For a euro area bank, is it "significant" (ECB-supervised) or smaller (national supervisor)? This tells you where to find reliable filings.
5. Use primary sources. The FDIC and ECB publish free, downloadable data. Industry summaries are fine for context, but quote the regulator for a figure you will defend in a meeting.
If someone claims a single European bank is "bigger than the entire US banking system," they have confused a number somewhere. No individual bank approaches the $24trn system total. That mismatch is your cue to check the perimeter and the metric.
